I Hiked from Göteborg-Backamo.

Terrain:
This is very varied but has quite a lot of medium hills. So expect to burn quite alot of calories going up and back down them.
You will also hike a few times through some Fresh cut Forests.
If you go as we went around August-September you have chance it will rain and that creates a lot of mud. So Gaiters is not a luxury. We where happy we had them.

Sleeping Accomodations:
You will see a lot of huts where you can rest/sleep. But bring something to hang in front of the door opening since non of them have a door (we used our tent)
If you have a tent you're never far from a flat piece of land where you can pitch your it.
Even hammock-campers will easily find trees to use.
There are trekking motels in Göteborg, Kungälv and Backamo.

Supplies:
In Göteborg you have Naturekompaniet and a lot of grocery stores. So there you can easily buy fuel and food.
On the trail we passed a big grocery store just before Küngalv. But for the rest you might see in the bigger villages a Fritids-store where sometimes they sell some dried food.
We bought all our food before hand so we had no problem. But it made for heavy packs.

Water you can get from most lakes (you will pass enough of them). Don't take it from streams because they are not always so clean.

Toilet/washing:

Well, most of the time the forest will do for toilet use. Just bury the waste deep enough.
To clean yourselve and clothes you can use water from the lakes but don't dump your soap water back into the lake (even the biodegradable ones). Think about the enviroment, people!!!

Weather:
Around The time I went (late agust- early september) You can have a bit of rain sometimes. Also the nightly temperatures can be a bit cold. But if your sleeping system can handle (comfort) 0°C you will be warm. But bring a beanie for when it does get cold.

That's a basic review.
Has nothing to do with Outdoor or travel.

Well a year has gone by and a lot off changes happened. In 2013 I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. To say it simple I have chronic inflammation of the large intestine. So a lot of diarrhoea and long days on the toilet. That is the biggest reason this blog has been so silent.

Something you need to know is that I train in Kenjutsu (the ancient art of Japanese sword fighting.) Something I really like to do and I enjoy immensely. Due to being sick I haven't been training since October. That just sucks. I really hope i will get soon so I can pick up my bokken (wooden sword) and feel zen again. I need this.
What is not to heavy but every gram I can take off is better. But weight isn't the biggest problem, it is size that matters.
Packsize more specifically, it is so much easier and practical.
A men whould think that such lightweight comes with cold nights. Well, I tested this during a chilly night (10°C) and it kept me warm. There was a moment I started feel cold I thought but it turned out not to be a problem.

There is only one small problem. I need to blow this up with my breath. What transfer moisture in the mat. And over time nasty stuff can grow inside of it, wich can damage the mat over time. But this problem will be taken care of shortly.

And that's all i have to say about it.
It isn't much but I promise to get back to you with my "pump-solution" and a long term review.

Dries

Drieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13788535970533766437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7580694626300899905.post-89133812233539930212011-10-21T21:03:00.010+02:002011-12-06T21:08:39.962+01:00Big Buy Review x3: Jack Wolfskin Tarp tent, Solarmio 31 Solar panel and 2 Flexfoil Sting kitesSo it is time to finally get something going on this blog. And what is better than 3 reviews.
So let's go:

1. The Jack Wolfskin Tarp tent
This tent isn't available anymore. I can't even find it on jack wolfskin's site.
But here we go:
Weight: 2,34 Kg
This is quite ok for a 2 person tent. But as with all 2 person tents, there just isn't enough space for 2 persons plus 2 backpacks.
But I slept in it on my own. And it is just spacious and nice. I even had space for cooking in my front-tent.

However there are some drawbacks:

You get quite a big gap under the door if you use the original pole.
This can be solved by using a walking pole, but they are mostly heavier and the gap helps with ventilation.

If you use it as a solo tent it is still heavy.

If you set it up as jack wolfskin tells you, the inner and outer layer will touch wich is never good.

So if you cycle alot and weight isn't to big of an issue. It is perfect for you.

2. Solarmio 31 Solar Panel

This handy, but not-so-little solar panel comes in quite handy.
It is quite heavy, but in car travel or Long distance biking it is just perfect.

It can't break and it is compatible with a lot of mobile phones.
Unfortunately it isn't compatible wit both my phones. But there is a silver lining for the more recent phones. It uses a USB-port as output. So even iphone, ipod and a lot of other things can easily be loaded.

The biggest minus will be: Not compatible with all phones and it is costly to order another one.
Also it would been nice if the powerbank had a bigger capacity.

3. Flexfoil Sting Kite (both 2,7 and 3,3 m²)

I bought this two nice kites for only €50. (Normally both of them cost like € 220 each).
The first time I used them I was suprised how easy they were to handle. Once you get the lines attached, it is so easy to get it up in the air.

Okay, you need some space the first time you want to attach the lines. But after that it is easy as pie.

One thing you need to know is, you got to watch out in stronger winds with big kites. you really have to use all your strength to keep it from flying away than.

Good luck

DriesDrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13788535970533766437noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7580694626300899905.post-84613330856739810332011-09-09T00:43:00.003+02:002011-09-13T21:28:38.019+02:00Big Buy Review: Lumostar Plus PZ

This simple gaslamp is just great.
I only had one problem: The piezo broke down. This handy little thingy is just stylish. I can think of two reasons why i should use this:
1. Traveling through china. And don't trusting the local cuttlery.
2. To show off. (wich can be fun)

But they simply do there job and are lightweight.

This one is from before the time GPS was build-in every freakin device. So before using it one must calibrate it. That made me a bit sceptic. But I calibrated it and got out my old fashioned compass and I don't see a real big difference.

Some features:

Fix to certain grade and see how much you are deviate.

Use the opposite grade so you can walk exactly back.

Backlight.

One drawback is that you need to calibrate it and you do this by rotating it. And I just don't trust it. But If I disappear during my next trip. You people know why...

DriesDrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13788535970533766437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7580694626300899905.post-52406489326524999032011-05-22T12:30:00.013+02:002011-05-28T11:14:26.582+02:00Big buy Review: The North face rain pants (Flight series)Prophecy Rain pants
(Not anymore in most stores)
This simple but very light buddy is amazing. Non rain and I walked around 100 km. (in about 3,5 days)
I tried out 2 different brands of socks. Here is the review:

1) The Smartwool Midweight Hiking Socks
These great socks are made of 74% merino wool. And like we all know (or most of us) wool products are just splendid.

They breath very well.

They isolate just amazingly good.

You don't faint everytime you take your foot out your shoe..

But I found out one drawback.

They aren't so strong. After washing and using them for 2 times, they started to loose some fluffyness.

Now there is no reason to panic and loose hope: I bought another pair.

2) The Bridgedale Endurance Trekker
These socks are amazing. They are a blend of 41% New Wool
37% Nylon/polyamide
21% Endurofil™/polypropylene
1% Lycra®/elastane

There is less wool in it.

They are a bit warmer.

Just fit amazing.

Drawbacks:

A bit sweaty and warm.

They kinda stink after you a day.

End decision:
I tested both of them in hot sweaty environment. And what did I think.
Well my feeling and thought goes toward Bridgedale . Why?
They just fit me so well, and they are just good enough
Although I must admit that the Smartwool kept me much better ventilated.
But still I prefer Bridgeldale, they just ar so strong.

DriesDrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13788535970533766437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7580694626300899905.post-9880070731818072992011-03-07T21:24:00.013+01:002011-05-22T01:11:27.871+02:00365 days...Only 2 weeks and this blog exists 1 year!!!
Time to look to the past AND future.

First off all I told i was gonna buy a new backpack. Well I have ordered one, but it's not a deuter or a macpac. Well what is it?? Here i go:
I ordered a Kajka from Fjällräven:

Height: 76 cm

Materiaal: Vinylon F

System: Perfect Fit

Total weight: 2900 g

Webbing: Nylon

Volume: Approx 75 liter

Zips: YKK

Some nice things about it:

It has a special pocket for your water bottle. You can reach easily for it.

It is made from a really strong fabric.

and what I really like: It has a special wet compartment. You can put in wet clothing and it will stay ventilated and will keep drying!!!

Here is video from the makers.

What I did this year:

I went to the coast. I hiked a bit but I returned for a job (wich I now do fulltime).

I bought a Fleece and softshell (reviews coming up)

I decided that I am not going to scotland this year. But I am going the summer of 2012. Scotland or South-Sweden.

What do I have planned the next 365 days:

Review Hiking socks (coming in April)

Hike the complete Belgian-coast. Not just part of it. :-p

Review my new backpack (coming VERY soon, propably a video).

Now that was it.

See you guys (:-D) next time,

DriesDrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13788535970533766437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7580694626300899905.post-50606678744512213612011-02-13T21:16:00.008+01:002011-05-20T17:23:52.223+02:00Sanyo ReviewI bought this camera mostly for on travel.
But it is just real goood

720 HD. wich works real good, it gives a really good picture. As it says it is indeed waterproof. (for 1 hour at 1.5M atleast :-D).
Very nice color when lighting is good.
But when you go above ISO 200 it gets grainy and a lot of loss of quality.

See here for a a small test video: http://vimeo.com/19356999)

It is small and perfect.
But because it's small it has sometimes shaky pictures
Thats all

DriesDrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13788535970533766437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7580694626300899905.post-29259094858797080692011-01-23T21:27:00.001+01:002011-01-23T21:29:02.780+01:00CamcorderHello everybody (if somebody is reading this),

I got myselve a camcorder. Mostly for filming travels but also for some video reviews. Normally it will arrive this week.
Oh, and by the way it's the Sanyo Xacti VPC-CA9.

It is very compact and waterproof ( to a depth of 1,5m). I really like this cause this means I don't have to worry if it gets a bit wet while filming in the rain.
But enough about this camcorder. I will post something review like after i tested it a few days.

Wolves have no king

DriesDrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13788535970533766437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7580694626300899905.post-56995374390205787662010-12-07T18:01:00.004+01:002010-12-07T19:55:47.482+01:00Review:Sleeping Bag millet Baikal 1000After some downtime I am back.
And as promised: The review for the Baikal 1000.

I bought this bag end October. I first wanted to buy the Baikal 750 but the nice lady in the shop told me it was not a good allround bag, more a summer bag.
So after some thinking I walked out with this beauty.

It weighs 1 kilo and has a lenght of 185 cm.
I used it for 1 week continuously. And it did its job pretty well. I felt no cold and was really comfortable. The average temprature at night must have been between 5°C and 0°C.
Millet claims it will easily withstand temperatures of 3°C and it truly does.
The only small problem is that it is a tight fit. I am just (but really just) big enough.
But that's personal.

I haven't done a in-field test but that will come later in the year 2011.

This sleeping bag is just a good bag that does its job. A fine and light bga that is ideal for hiking.

I can't wait until i get it into the field.

DriesDrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13788535970533766437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7580694626300899905.post-86963755042304469492010-11-30T19:43:00.004+01:002011-05-28T11:13:39.676+02:00Winter is back in town!!!!

The first snow fell this day!!
Finally the best season of the year is coming.

I have some news: I bought the biakal 1000 of Millet. I was looking at the movie Into the wild and this sentence just came up. It is the second best sentence that tellls what I feel about traveling and hiking.

I mean, When people travel to some far away they easily say that they could live there for ever. We go to new places to flee away from the stressfull life. We wanna relax.

I just wanna feel freedom. Not to worry about going to a specific place and need to get there at a certain time. Just to walk and stop when I wanna stop...

Wolves Have No King....

DriesDrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13788535970533766437noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7580694626300899905.post-17388260076820327112010-10-26T21:35:00.004+02:002010-11-22T20:58:04.102+01:00UpdateBack after a long time.
Here are the things you need to know that happend after the last blog:

I got a job at a Outdoor shop. You can cook in it if you plan a bit.
It's real easy and simple. You can buy Ethanol or Methanol in every scandinavian shop in every village. Good for me ;-). It may even works with strong vodka or anything else that has a high alcohol percentage. (above 70° is real minimum, above 90° is better)

Now the down points:
- Uses a bit much fuel in cold weather.
- You can't adjust the flame that much.
- if you go to real cold weather (polar like) it won't work. Than you can better use Gasoline in special stoves.

But after all I love it so much. It's easy ,just so simple and so sturdy. Used it a lot of times and always did it do the job. Perfect and amazing.

Dries

PS: Just BUY it :-DDrieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13788535970533766437noreply@blogger.com0
